TV Ratings: 'Vampire Diaries,' 'Secret Circle' Off to Good Starts

CW"The Vampire Diaries" Against repeats and and a reality series, the CW continued its fall premiere week with the return of The Vampire Diaries and companion The Secret Circle. The Vampire Diaries opened its third season, delivering 3 million total viewers at 8 p.m., an improvement from the last season's finale but down slightly from the Season 2 premiere. In the adults 18-49 demographic, Diaries drew a 1.4 rating, slipping from the 1.6 it posted last September. STORY: 'Vampire Diaries' Star Ian Somerhalder on Whether He'll Direct At 9 p.m., Kevin Williamson's other supernatural series The Secret Circle (3 million, 1.3) actually outdrew Diaries by a couple thousand viewers, according to preliminary numbers. Circle, starring Britt Robertson, retained all of its lead-in in total viewers and had a 93 percent retention among adults 18-49. Additionally, it built on Diaries' audience in the female teens demo by 11 percent. The CW placed third on the night in the ad-coveted demo, posting a 1.4. ABC, airing a two-hour season finale of Wipeout (6.9 million, 2.2), down 19 percent from last year, and CBS tied for first with a 1.8.
